Making roscos.... YUM!

So this is actually a very overdue post, but I just hadn't gotten around to posting the pictures yet! My roommate Bree and I got to go over to our friend's house to make roscos, which are a donut-type treat that is traditionally made for holy week. They are DELICIOUS!! And don't worry, I have the recipe now! =)

Anyway, a little back story:

One evening way back in February Bree, Jenn, and I went with Jenn's host mom (Choni) to a convent to watch a movie about a saint. Very random outing, but it was certainly interesting to see the cloistered nuns behind the gated window and to experience a prayer service in a real-life convent. After, we went out with Choni and a bunch of her friends for tapas, and the night then continued at Choni's friend's house (her name is Conchi) where we were given a new treat to try: roscos. We were immediately impressed and said that we wanted to get the recipe, so we set up a date to learn how to make them from the master.

At the end of March the long-awaited day finally arrived! We headed over to Jenn's to get our cook on, very excited to have the opportunity to eat more roscos! After making a giant mess of flour, orange peels, Fanta (that's right, orange pop is a major ingredient!), and olive oil, we had a HUGE batch of little orange-flavored sugar-covered donut things, and we were VERY happy girls! =) I've included the recipe and photos of the cooking (and eating!) process for everyone to enjoy, and I'm hoping that once I get back home I can attempt to make them so you all can have a taste of a traditional Spanish treat!

Here is the recipe as I was writing it out in the moment... it is pretty hilarious because it is a disastrous mix of Spanglish according to the way my brain was translating things!

4 huevos
cada huevo -> 3 huevos de azucar
beat eggs and sugar
3 eggfuls of fanta per egg
3 eggs of aceite cada egg
orange peel (grated)
cada dos huevos -> un sobre 16g de yeast
anadir harina hasta que es como dough
aceita para que no stick -> table y manos
plato de azucar y de servilletas para despues
use knife to cut/make lines in middle of ring
put in oil and cook in pan! YUM!

Here is the English translation! (WARNING: Makes a LOT!)

4 eggs (take only very top of shell off of one of the eggs and rinse it out so you can use it as a measuring tool!)
12 eggs of sugar (pour the sugar into the empty, rinsed-out eggshell, then dump into bowl)
Beat eggs and sugar
Add: 12 eggs of Fanta Orange
12 eggs of olive oil
1 grated orange peel
32 g of yeast
Mix together and slowly add flour until it becomes doughy (it takes a lot of flour!)
Put olive oil on table and hands so the dough doesn't stick
Take small pieces and roll and form into a ring (like a donut)
Use a knife to make indentation around outside of ring
Fry in olive oil (one side, then flip) until cooked through
Put in sugar to coat it, then place on napkin to cool.
