As I was saying, I've now officially been to three continents: North America, Europe, and AFRICA! Some girlfriends from my program and I went to Morocco for the weekend (with a tour group, we aren't crazy after all) last weekend, and it was amazing! They really aren't kidding when they tell you that Africa is basically a different world. The minute we crossed the border between Ceuta (a city on the African coast that politically is part of Spain) and Morocco you could tell that you were in a different country. Everything looked poorer, people were dressed completely different, the drivers were INSANE, there was livestock wandering around the sides of the roads... I could just go on. We stayed in a hotel in the city of Tetuan both nights, but we also got to go see Tangier and a smaller city called Chechouen. I have to say that I wasn't really a big fan of the huge cities. Traveling in that area of the world as a girl isn't always the most fun experience: the minute our Moroccan guide left us on our own for free time, we started getting catcalls from all directions: "Sweetie!" "Where you from?" "Want to buy? Good price!" and even more "Sweetie!". One man even called us the Spice Girls, which kind of cracked us up. Not only did we have to deal with all the unwanted attention from the men, but the vendors also wouldn't leave us alone. One man who was selling carpets in Tangier came up to us at least five times trying to get us to buy... once even after my friend had bought something from him and we were sitting in a restaurant! They are very bold. However, despite all this we felt very safe because we had a Spanish group leader, a Moroccan tour guide, plus another Moroccan helper who was just there to watch the group to make sure nothing happened. Thanks to all this security we were able to enjoy ourselves in spite of all the annoying men!
